Last evening, I wrote about the Detroit Pistons Summer League team for 2006, and the lesser known players accompanying the team’s rookie and sophmore players. With so many interesting (and well travelled) characters set to be on the squad, I’ll continue giving the 411 on other Summer Pistons.
Frank Williams - Joe Dumars was set to acquire Frank from the Chicago Bulls in 2004/5 in exchange for Smush Parker and Horace Jenkins. When that deal fell through, Williams’ NBA career ended with extended time on injured reserve as Williams eventually became a man without a team after being cut by the LA Clippers in early October of 2005.
Frank Williams sat out all of the 2005/6 season. Prior to that, he played sparingly for the Bulls in 04/05, with two lengthy stays on IR, and by season’s end had only racked up 9 games played.
Originally out of the University of Illinois, Williams was drafted 25th in the 2002 NBA draft by Denver. His rights were traded to the NY Knicks, and in his rookie season played 21 games with a two month stay on IR for left ankle tendinitis.
That summer Frank participated in the Reebok Summer Pro League with the Knicks, and had a much better season in 2003/4 when he logged 56 regular season and 4 playoff games during the campaign. Once again however, he spent one month on IR with a groin injury.
That offseason, Williams played with the Knicks at the Southern California Summer Pro League. By August however he was traded to the Bulls, and within 14 months fell out of the NBA.
Trivia: When Williams was traded on draft day from Denver to New York, it was with future Piston Antonio McDyess. And when he was traded from New York to Chicago, it was in a deal including former Piston Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams.
Marko Jovanovic - Marko is a 7 foot tall, 24 year old center from Serbia and Montenegro.Since going pro in 2001, Jovanovic has playedin the German Bundesliga, the premier basketball league in the Federal Republic.
From 02/03 to 04/05 Marko played with Rhein Energy Koln, later BS Energy Braunschweig and last season with BG Karlsruhe.
Despite his size, Marko has never averaged 10 points or 6 rebounds per game and is primarily a backup player.
Key attributes according to scouting reports indicates that Jovanovic is a grinder type player, with hustle and toughness.
Rasheim Wright - Played NCAA Division 2 ball for District of Columbia (2 years) after transferring from Gloucester County (NJCAA). In his second season at UDC, he was second in the division in scoring 26.9 points per game, and also tallied 7.4 rebounds per game.
In what was to be Wright’s 3rd season at UDC, the University’s president cancelled basketball for the year, and Rasheim began looking for employment overseas. In Febuary 2005, Wright agreed to play for Bosna Sarajevo of the BIH League (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Averaging 17.6 points, and 5.4 rebounds with a high game of 36 points.
That summer Wright worked out for the Detroit Pistons and participated in Summer League play with the Philadelphia 76ers. In the fall, Rasheim was drafted by the NBDL Tulsa 66ers but was subsequently cut and around Christmas joined the ABA Tijuana Dragons. By February 2006 Wright was with Al Moutahed a Lebanese Division A team.
In 8 games with Al Moutahed, Rasheim averaged 33.4 points per game to lead the league. With 39 minutes played on average, he shot 49.5% from the field, with 69% from 2, 27% from 3 and 62% from the foul line.
Sam Hoskin - At 25 years old, Sam Hoskin is the grand-pappy of the 2006 Pistons’ Toshiba Vegas Summer League team. Originally out of Bishop Borgess High School in Detroit, Hoskin spent 1 year at East Kentucky, then the next season at Schoolcraft Community College before transferring to DePaul in 2001 for his final 2 years of college.
A 6′9″, 250+ lbs. Power Forward, Hoskin averaged 15.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game as a senior at DePaul.
Then it was on to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament followed by being drafted 2nd overall by the Westchester Wildfire of the USBL. While not drafted in the 2003 NBA draft, the Seattle Supersonics did invite Hoskin to training camp but cut him before the season began.
The remainder of the 2003/4 season Sam hooked up with Hapoel Galil Elyon of the Israeli Premier League. In 20 games he averaged 21.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game and in 2 FIBA Europe Cup games; 24 points, 11.5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals per game.In 2004/5 Hoskin played in the Russian Superleague for Ural Great Perm.
In 35 league Superleague games, Sam was the second overall scorer (21.4 points per game) and the third best rebounder (9.6 rebounds per game). He then followed that up with 14 FIBA Europe games averaging 20.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
Last season with Dynamo Moscow Region another Russian Superleague team, Hoskin saw his numbers drop to around 13 points and 6 rebounds in 12 FIBA Europe Cup games and 32 Russian League games.
Nik Caner-Medley - A “does everything well” utility man, Nik was recently passed over in the 2006 NBA draft after working out for the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Bobcats.
Caner-Medley is a left handed Small Forward, most proficient at rebounding and jumpshooting. Last season at the University of Maryland, Nik averaged 15.3 points, 2.1 assists and 6.3 rebounds per game. He also hit FTs at a 80%+ rate and is known for drawing fouls by driving hard to the basket or off of fakes.
